TUSCUMBIA -- Colbert County commissioners Tuesday took another step toward creating an ordinance aimed at ridding the county of junk.

Commissioners agreed unanimously to advertise a junk ordinance that has already been approved in Marshall County.

The ordinance, if adopted, would implement rules and regulations regarding junk in order to protect residents from public-nuisances.

The ordinance will be advertised in local newspapers twice a week for three weeks. A public hearing will take place to hear opinions from county residents.

Commissioners were given the power to establish ordinances-of this type after residents approved a self-governance act in November.

"I think it's a good thing," Commission Chairman Rex Burleson said. "It's not going to be favorable to everybody."

County Engineer John Bedford said his workers are already compiling a list of locations that could be cited for accumulations of junk.

After the public hearing, the ordinance will be advertised again and voted on by the commission.

In other business, the-commission:

  • declared the wrought iron railings on a dilapidated house near the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park surplus county property.

  • appointed Dr. Cooper King to the Department of Human Resources board of directors.

  • approved the final cost of $43,901.88 for the Haley Road slide correction project.

  • approved the application to vacate a right-of-way in the Aurora Springs subdivision in the Riverton-Rose Trail area.

  • approved the requirement of a subdivision construction bond for future developments in the county.

  • accepted the low bid of $69,023.50 each for two tandem axle dump trucks from Long-Lewis Sterling, of Madison.

  • designated three tandem axle dump trucks as surplus property.

  • approved the purchase of a $500 advertisement in the Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet program.

  • approved the application of a federal grant for the Colbert County Drug Task Force.
