SHEFFIELD -- City council Monday unanimously approved an ordinance that reinstates a 5-mill property tax that helps fund the city's school system.

The tax, which was originally approved 20 years ago, was rescinded earlier this year after it was learned that it had expired.

Sheffield voters approved the continuation of the tax May 8 by a vote of 631 to 83.

City clerk Clayton Kelly said the tax would go into effect Oct. 1. Proceeds from the tax, which raises about $200,000 annually for the school system, will not be paid until 2008, he said.

Reinstating the tax brings the city's tax rate back to 19 mills.

In other business, the council:

  • approved a $36.98 expense related to Mayor Billy Don Anderson's trip to a League of Municipalities function.

  • approved a $1,529 expense to upgrade the computer system in the city clerk's office.

  • announced vacancies on the Sheffield Historic Commission and Sheffield Planning Board.

  • approved the installation of a street light near 1609 Sheffield Drive.

  • issued a proclamation naming May 19-27 as National Safe Boating Week.

  • issued a proclamation honoring Calvin Lewis Hampton.

  • agreed to give Jose Luis Michel and Thomas Daniel Green additional time to complete repairs to dwellings that had been deemed public nuisances by the city.
