SHEFFIELD -- City council Monday unanimously approved an ordinance that reinstates a 5-mill property tax that helps fund the city's school system.
The tax, which was originally approved 20 years ago, was rescinded earlier this year after it was learned that it had expired.
Sheffield voters approved the continuation of the tax May 8 by a vote of 631 to 83.
City clerk Clayton Kelly said the tax would go into effect Oct. 1. Proceeds from the tax, which raises about $200,000 annually for the school system, will not be paid until 2008, he said.
Reinstating the tax brings the city's tax rate back to 19 mills.
