Sunday sales referendum likely in September

SHEFFIELD -- Residents will likely go to the polls Sept. 25 to decide if they want to legalize the sale of alcohol in the city on Sundays.

City council members are expected to set that date for a referendum on the issue at their next council meeting, which has been moved to July 23.

"We will have no ordinance until we get the verbiage right," Mayor Billy Don Anderson said.

Anderson said the council cannot hold the referendum until two months after the ordinance is approved and posted.

If voters approve the measure, alcohol may be legally sold on Sundays at restaurants and hotels in the Sheffield city limits.

The mayor and council have stated that Sunday sales will help produce much needed sales tax revenue for the city.

In other business, the council recognized resident Johnnie Mae King, who was recently named the Arc of Alabama's Citizen of the Year.

Anderson said King is now going for the national award.

"Thank you, thank you," King said after receiving a proclamation from the mayor and a key to the city. "I appreciate what y'all do for me."

In additional business the council:

  • approved a liquor license for Southern Package Store, 3802 Hatch Blvd.

  • approved a resolution to hire a part-time employee to assist in various city hall offices.

  • appointed Councilman Waylon Huguley to the Shoals Family Success Board.

  • declared a lawn mower in the street department surplus property and agreed to give it to the city board of education.

  • approved expenses for city employees: Jerry Reaves, building department, $21.13; Karen Osborn, city clerk's office, $172.23; Greg Heatherly and Dustin Parrish, fire department $181 each.

  • approved $950 to provide travel expenses to a group who will come to Sheffield to produce an episode of a television show on catfishing on Wilson and Pickwick lakes.

  • announced vacancies on the Historic Sheffield Commission and the Sheffield Planning Board.
