O'Neal Bridge passes inspection

The inspection of O'Neal Bridge has revealed no deficiencies in its structure, Florence Mayor Bobby Irons announced Tuesday.

Gov. Bob Riley ordered inspections of three Alabama bridges because they were similar in design to the Interstate 35 bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis, Minn., on Aug. 1.

"They did not find any changes in the structure," Irons said. "The bridge is safe."

The bridge, like all state bridges, is inspected every two years. The last inspection was in June 2006. No structural deficiencies were noted in that inspection, but several repairs were made.

Alabama Department of Transportation Division Engineer James Brown said there were no changes in the bridge since the last inspection.
