No new millage

I am speaking for many Sheffield citizens who say we do not want to give more taxes to a superintendent and school board that allows and approves a deficit budget.

Now here come the educators again asking us for more funds from the property owners of Sheffield, many of whom are senior citizens on fixed incomes.

They now expect the voters to bail out the school system again.

The voters just approved a 20-year mill tax renewal a few months ago.

Whatever happened to responsible fiduciary duties? Recently, the board of education approved the Sheffield school "offices" receive new windows, then reviewed a new central air conditioning system for the "offices," and then reviewed a request for a new multi-thousand dollar copier. This was all going on while they had a 5-mill tax expired, and that was then in jeopardy.

Budgets and expense allocations must be voted on and passed by a majority of the school board.

The board, which, by law, the superintendent directs and is the leader of. The school board is autonomous once appointed by the city council for five year terms.

How convenient that both the superintendent and the board can spend our taxes without being accountable to the citizens and approve a balanced budget!

On Sept. 11, I will vote "no mill tax."
