The school board Monday approved a $15.6 million budget for the next school year, up slightly from last year's budget.

In a financial report to the board, the district's business manager, Sandra Carpenter, said revenues are expected to exceed expenditures by approximately $552,000. Last year's ending balance was less than half that amount at $229,000.

The budget includes federal, state and local money.

Superintendent Joe Walters said he was pleased with the budget. The board will meet today at noon for its budget hearing process required by the state. Carpenter's presentation Monday night represented the first.

In other action, the board:

  • approved a 2007-08 capital plan which will include installing air conditioning in the high school gymnasium and making allowances for a potential influx of students whose families are associated with National Alabama, the railcar company slated to begin building operations by the end of the year.

  • hired Rebecca Richmond as pre-school teacher at Trenholm Primary School. The class of 12 students begins in mid-October.
