Man sentenced to life in prison

Colbert County Circuit Court Judge Jackie Hatcher imposed a life sentence for Gary Jackson Pounders, who was convicted in August for the July 2006 murder of Bryce McCullough, 68, of the Mountain Springs community.

Angela Hulsey, assistant Colbert County district attorney, said the sentencing hearing was uneventful. “Because he had two prior felony convictions, the only possible sentence he could receive was 99 years or life in prison,” Hulsey said.

The prior convictions included receiving stolen property, she said.

During the three-day trial, Pounders, 46, admitted he was at McCullough’s home when he was killed, but contends that another man was responsible for the killing.

Pounders said a friend of his used an ax to kill McCullough.

A key piece of evidence in the trial was a pair of blue jeans stained with McCullough’s blood. An investigator testified the jeans belonged to Pounders.
