Remelle M. Napier

Remelle Mitchell Napier, 79, was born the fifth child and second daughter to Alfred Mitchell Sr. and Louise Mitchell on April 12, 1928. She died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007.

She was raised in a Christian home and professed her faith in Christ, being baptized as a young girl.

She received her education at Slater Elementary School and graduated from Burrell High School as salutatorian in the class of 1948. She matriculated as a freshman at Tennessee A&I State College in the fall of 1948, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. She received her master's degree from Tuskegee Institute in 1965.

She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas J. Napier, in 1950. To this union were born three children: Gary Ricardo, Haviland Remelle and Thomas Zarack.

Unfortunately, Haviland preceded her mother's death by departing this life Oct. 26, 2002.

Remelle taught school for 45 years in the Lauderdale County and Florence City school systems.

Remelle was active in the community as she volunteered for W.C. Handy Home and Museum cabin committee, ECM Hospital volunteer, and other organizations. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She also was an active member of the Altruistic Elite Social Club, and a participant in Community Bible Study Fellowship.

In later life, she enjoyed traveling, local and internationally - Israel, Turkey, Italy, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. God blessed her with a very good life - spiritually and physically.

Public viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with visitation from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Funeral Home, Muscle Shoals.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Florence, with burial in Florence City Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.
