Mayor: Town logo indicates growth

Killen - Killen officials have spent more than $1,300 on the purchase of replacement flags bearing the town's logo, as well as United States flags, both of which fly at all municipal buildings.
Although it might seem like a big expense for a small place, Mayor Jerry Mitchell said the logo, whether it's on flags or newsletters, is an important as well as unifying theme, and it's also an indicator of growth.
Originally designed almost four years ago as part of a contest, Mitchell said the winning design incorporates Killen-specific elements.
"The blue on the background represents the water, and the red represents the red of the blood, sweat and tears of those who have gone before us," he said. "There's also a picture of the new Shoal Creek Bridge and the old Lock Six."
Lions on each side of the seal represent the mascot for Brooks High School and the Lions Club, a long-standing civic organization in Killen.
The logo also bears the phrase, "Beauty of the Past. Hope of the Future."
In addition to adorning flags at town hall as well as the police and fire stations, it's part of the masthead on the town newsletter and it has just been added to the doors of the town's maintenance trucks.
After four years, Killen Town Clerk Wanda Simpson said it was time to replace the flags as they had become faded and tattered. Killen spent $840 on the logo flags and $552 on the American flags for a total price of $1,392.
Mitchell said he'd like to see it as part of signs on the eastern and western entrances into Killen along U.S. 72.
"We've got nothing planned at present, but it's something we have that gives us an opportunity to put it out there as a representation of the town," he said.
