Lauderdale County placed three players in the top 10 as the Tigers won the team championship at Monday's Shoals Shootout at
Florence Golf & Country Club. The tournament featured 12 area high teams and more than 70 total players.
Lauderdale County finished with a team score of 309 to edge second-place Brooks (312). Muscle Shoals (338) placed third, followed by
Red Bay (342), Central Red (346), Rogers (357), Wilson (363),
Florence Silver (365),
Lexington (366), Mars Hill (370),
Sheffield (372) and Central Black (380).
Central's Garrett Mayfield won the individual championship. Mayfield and Brooks' Deane Rikard finished tied for the lead after both shot 74. Mayfield then won a three-hole playoff to earn medalist honors.
In addition to Mayfield and Rikard, the all-tournament team consisted of Brooks' Spencer Pace (76);
Lauderdale County's Levi Gordon (76); Rogers' Daniel Garrett (76); Shoals Christian's Ben Wood (77); Muscle Shoals' Eric Broadfoot (77);
Red Bay's Grant Fancher (77); and
Lauderdale County's Lucas Shelton (77) and Connor Godsey (77).
Florence second in Birmingham:
Florence Blue shot 324 in cold, windy conditions at the Greystone Golf Club in the first round of the 16-team Bradley Johnson Memorial tournament.
The Falcons are 10 shots off the lead heading into today's final round. Spain Park, paced by Trey Del Greco's 69, leads at 314.
David Zickler led
Florence with a 74 and is in second place. Sean Bogran fied an 80, while Andrew Rasch shot 84. Paul Wallace shot 86 and Andy Boughner finished with an 87.
BaseballRogers 11, Wilson 1: Chris Hughes's grand slam highlighted Rogers' win against Wilson in Class 4A, Area 16 play.
Hughes, who added a double, finished with four RBIs for the Pirates (8-5, 2-1). Caleb Pigg added three hits, while winning pitcher Neck Melton, Hunter Jones, Caleb Smitherman and Lucas Beavers had two hits each.
Dustin Richardson finished with three hits in the loss.
Sheffield 2, Colbert Heights 1: Michael Melton outdueled Jacob Walker as
Sheffield opened Class 3A, Area 16 play with a win.
Brady Gregory scored the winning run on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Melton allowed only seven hits while striking out eight in nine innings.
Walker pitched 8 2/3 innings and allowed only five hits. Zack Craig led
Sheffield with two hits. Thomas Lindsey and Nick Highfield each had one hit.
Covenant Christian 8, Vina 4: Thomas Grant doubled twice and added a single to lead Covenant Christian past Vina. John Sasser added two hits to help Lee Williams earn the win.
Randy Barnes had three hits for Vina.
Hatton 11, Tanner 0: Darren Hand struck out five and allowed one hit in Hatton's win over Tanner. Tevin Terrell led the offense by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Zack Brewer went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Hornets (4-12)
Deshler 19, Brooks 7: Blake Barber hit a grand slam and finsihed with six RBIs as Deshler (6-12) pounded Brooks. J. Gardiner went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dominique King added two hits with one RBI. Parker Wright was the winning pitcher.
Hackleburg 3, Winfield 2: Garrett McHenry (4-1) struck out 12 and allowed no earned runs in five innings in the win for
Hackleburg (12-4). Aaron Bishop powered the
Hackleburg offense, going 3-for-3 and driving in two runs. Jason Leggitt doubled in the fourth inning and Coby Shackleford drove him in for the game-winning run.
Colbert County 6, Lexington 0: A Tyler Thigpen hit was the lone blemish for Indians pitcher Brian Davenport in
Colbert County's area opener. Davenport struck out nine and allowed only Thigpen's hit in the final inning of a complete-game shutout for the win.
Nick Flannagan doubled twice and drove in two runs for
Colbert County (9-7). Justin Noceda added a double, a single and two RBIs, and Colton Sherill had an RBI in the fourth to rejuvenate a slumping Indians offense.
Florence 14, Central 0: A 10-run third inning set the stage for
Florence's rout of the Wildcats. Evan Radtke started the surge with a single, as the Falcons strung together five straight hits and sent 16 batters to the plate.
Zac Summy had a double and two singles and an RBI for
Florence (14-6). Evan Woods and Radtke finished with two singles each.
Gary Green and Kyle Green each doubled for Central.
Phil Campbell 6, Red Bay 2: Stephen Lacy hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning that was the game-winner for
Phil Campbell (9-5, 1-1). Lacy (3-1) also picked up the win, striking out 11 and giving up five hits in a complete game.
Caleb Thompson had two RBIs and Jack Deal drove in another run for the Bobcats. Nathan Hopkins had a pair of hits for the Tigers.
Lauderdale County 7, Clements 6: Ovarys Nance did all he could on the mound and mustered a little more at the plate. After striking out 14 and allowing three hits in six innings for a no-decision, Nance (3-for-5) rocked a game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Zach Roberson allowed one hit in two innings for the win.
Matthew Moore's first-innning grand slam gave Clements an early lead, and
Lauderdale County trailed 5-3 before scoring two in the sixth to tie it.
Waterloo 11, Belgreen 1: Bradley Kelley doubled twice and drove in a run during an eight-run second inning for
Waterloo (6-6, 3-0). Chad Palmer got the win, striking out five and allowing one hit in three innings. Jonathan Word had three hits and an RBI for
Waterloo.
SoftballBrooks 11, Loretto 2: Breanna Hodges was the winning pitcher and Lakin Pointer got the save as Brooks (8-3) beat
Loretto.
Kelsey Heaps and Kayla Bratcher had four hits apiece for the Lions, while Pointer knocked in three runs with a triple.
Central 13, Waterloo 1: Candace Arreola set the pace for Central's victory over
Waterloo with a grand slam in the first inning. Casey Spillers allowed just one hit in the win. Jessi Law and Megan Williams had two RBIs a piece for the Wildcats (20-6).
Belgreen 15, Phil Campbell 2: Martha Billingham only allowed three hits in Belgreen's win against
Phil Campbell. Lauren McVicker lead the Bulldogs (9-3) with two hits and four RBIs. Amber Smith added a single with two RBIs.
SoccerHazel Green 2, Florence 0: Although Tim Ferguson, Andy Wilson, and Austin Gallegos all played well for
Florence, they could get the victory against Hazel Green. Hunter Rylee and Jameson Surratt combined for eight saves for the Falcons (8-5).
Lexington 4, West Limestone 3: Holly Robbins drove in Phoenix Young for the game-winning run in the top of the eighth.
Robbins went 3-for-4, Young finished 2-for-4 and Katie Wallace went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for
Lexington (7-1).
Jenna Patterson pitched all eight innings for the win, went 2-for-4 from the plate and scored three runs.
