CHEROKEE -- The State Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted by local authorities to investigate fires that destroyed a house and outbuilding early today.

Cherokee Fire Chief Chuck Lansdell said the fires were reported shortly after 1 a.m. near the intersection of Allsboro Road and Iuka Road. The area is south of U.S. 72.

“When we arrived, we had two structures fully involved about 100 yards apart and on opposite sides of the road,” Lansdell said.

He said the largest building was an unoccupied house, which was about 100 years old.

“It was collapsing when we got there,” Lansdell said. “The second structure appeared to be a small house or outbuilding, which was also unoccupied. We were able to extinguish that fire with moderate damage to the building.”

Lansdell said his department was assisted by the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from Riverton Rose Trail and Carters Branch, Miss.
