Two injured in explosion

Two Mississippi residents were rushed to Red Bay Hospital on Monday evening after an explosion at their home, officials said.

Emergency personnel at the hospital said the two people, a young boy and a 25-year-old woman, were apparently burned. Authorities said they believe a meth lab caused the explosion. The the victims were taken to Red Bay Hospital by private vehicle.

Personnel at the hospital said the victims as well as hospital personnel and staff had to be decontaminated before they could be transported to a trauma facility.

Authorities said an AirEvac helicopter was on standby to transport the victims as soon as possible.

Officials said the explosion happened at a residence near Tremont, Miss.

FLORENCE

Fire destroys storage facility

An early-morning fire did extensive damage Monday to a storage building at the Florence Street Department on Railroad Avenue, officials said.

David Koonce, manager of the street department, said the fire started around 2 a.m.

He said the building that burned was used to store old vehicle parts as well as paint that is used to strip roadways.

"The building was a total loss, but it didn't just burn to the ground," Koonce said. "The middle of the building is where most of the damage was."

He said it appeared that the fire could have started from some type of electrical short.

"One of our employees, who was coming to work to start the street sweeper, saw the fire and called the fire department," Koonce said.

He said the fire department responded quickly and put out the fire before it could spread and do more damage.

Unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle: A light, digital recorder, cordless drill, drill case and contents were taken from a 1982 white Toyota Land Cruiser that was parked in the 2000 block of Arlington Boulevard.

Theft: A pair of underwear was taken from a business in the 300 block of Cox Creek Parkway.

Burglary: An electric welder, three tool boxes filled with various tools, two impact wrenches, an air chisel, air grinder and air ratchet were taken from a residence in the 300 block of South Crown Street.

Unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle: An air compressor, two framing nailers, two finish nailers, a skill saw, extension cord, jig saw and a router were taken from a 2002 green Dodge truck that was parked in the 700 block of Branch Street.

Burglary: A pair of earrings with double diamonds and 10 assorted diamond rings were taken from a residence in the 200 block of South Spurr Street.

Unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle: Two credit cards, three different kinds of prescription medications, checks, brown purse and more than $1,700 in cash were taken from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Cox Creek Parkway.

Burglary: A riding lawn mower was taken from a residence in the 2700 block of Darby Drive.

Burglary: Cash totaling $30 was taken from a business in the 400 block of East Tennessee Street.

Unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle: A flip-down CD player with remote was taken from a 1995 black Plymouth Neon that was parked in the 2100 block of Cloyd Boulevard.
