Two area schools have been selected by U.S. News and World Report as two of America's best high schools: Lexington High School in Lauderdale County and Hatton High School in Lawrence County.

The list included 31 Alabama high schools that met criteria for the distinction. They fell into one of three categories: gold, silver and bronze.

Both local schools received the magazine's bronze award.

The criteria included success in three areas: Attaining performance levels that exceed statistical expectations given the school's relative level of student poverty as measured by state test scores in reading and math; achieving proficiency rates on state tests for the least advantaged student groups that exceed state averages; and preparing its students for college as measured by student participation and performance on advanced placement tests.

Lexington Principal Willie Joiner said making the list is a testament to the students, teachers and community.

"Our parents send us good kids, and we challenge them," Joiner said. "The school is just a reflection of the community. The past administration here has put this school in a great position. This is very encouraging to be recognized in a national publication, especially with as many schools as there are in Alabama."

Officials at Hatton High School could not be reached for comment.
