Adrienne Aragon, of Lakewood, Colo., received a Muse endowed scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduate of Green Mountain High School, she was a three-year letterman for varsity soccer. The daughter of Samantha Rangel, she plans to major in biology. John Collins Ledgewood, of Florence, received a Muse endowed scholarship from the University of North Alabama. He also received a Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Alabama scholarship. A graduate of Florence High School, he was selected for an internship with the Start on Success Program and received the senior bandsman and Patrick S. Gilmore Band awards. He was Skills USA president and treasurer, participated in symphonic, marching and concert bands, student council, science olympiad, chorus and the Latin and Key clubs. He is active in community service. He is the son of Alan and Collins Ledgewood. Michael Smelser, of Florence, graduated from Harding University, Searcy, Ark., on July 26. Majoring in general studies, he received a bachelor of arts degree. Lauren Richardson, of Muscle Shoals, received a Marcia Austin endowed scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduate of Colbert County High School, she was National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America president and a member of the National Honor Roll. She was a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Calendar Girl Pageant vice president, high school Web page editor, in the Big Brain competition top three, varsity cheerleader and UCLA all-star cheerleader. She participated in Youth Leadership Shoals and received the FBLA Membership Madness Award and Wendy's Heisman Award. She is active in community service. She is the daughter of Christine and Derrick Minor. Jennifer Patterson Rumble, of Nashville, Tenn., graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average from Belmont University with a master's degree in teaching on May 10. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. She received a bachelor's degree in history from Auburn University in 2006. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Patterson, Florence. High school seniors participating in Harding University's Honors Symposium this summer include: Adam Snodgrass, Amber Ashley and Brandon Sherrod, all of Florence. They each earned three hours of university credit. Wade William Stinson, of Florence, was welcomed as a first-year medical student to the Class of 2012 by the University of Kansas School of Medicine at its traditional White Coat ceremony on Aug. 1. A graduate of Bradshaw High School in Florence, he is the son of Wade Stinson. Ashley Newsome, a student at Mississippi State University, was named to the 2007-08 SEC freshman academic honor roll. She is a member of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team. To qualify for the honor roll, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average and completed 24 hours of non-remedial course work. She is the daughter of Louis and Michelle Newsome, Florence. Kira L. Boyd, of Leighton, received a four-year Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation scholarship from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A graduate of Muscle Shoals High School, she was in early scholars program at the University of North Alabama. She was a Muscle Shoals High School ambassador, 2006 Northern regional director of Alabama Anchor Clubs and member of National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Future Business Leaders of America, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Spanish club, 2008 MSHS coronation court and 2007 class of Youth Leadership Shoals. She received scholarships from Kappa Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority 2007 Debutante Program, Louise Isbell Ashe Memorial Scholarship of Helen Keller Hospital Foundation/Volunteer Auxiliary and Muscle Shoals Educational Foundation Scholarship. She was a 2008 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Muscle Shoals alumnae chapter outstanding student. She completed the ALSAMP Summer Bridge Program at University of Alabama at Birmingham, sponsored by National Science Foundation, where she took two college courses and won second place in the program's essay competition. The daughter of Alford and Waynett Boyd, she plans to major in biology/
pre-med.
Austen Oakley, of Florence, was recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in science. He will appear in the United States Achievement Academy's Official Yearbook published nationally. The son of Terry and Marsha Oakley, he attends Wilson School.
