TUSCUMBIA - As attorneys were preparing to choose a jury Monday to hear evidence against a Cherokee man charged with child sexual abuse, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Buddy Mack Howell, 66, pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a child less than 12. As part of the plea agreement, Howell applied for probation.

Colbert County Circuit Court Judge Hal Hughston has not set a date for the probation hearing.

The probation request is not guaranteed.

"We will certainly oppose probation in this case," said Chief Assistant Colbert District Attorney Kyle Brown.

Brown called the 10-year sentence a fair settlement. He said Howell faced two to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Brown said Howell was accused of sexually abusing the girl, who was an acquaintance, on or about July 23, 2007.

Defense attorney Steve Aldridge, of Tuscumbia, said it was Howell's decision to plead guilty.

"We are satisfied with the agreement," Aldridge said.

At 66 years old, that monster should be locked up for the rest of his life. Probation?! What are they insane? How many children has he tortured in the last 40 yrs? They don't really believe this is something he just started doing. Do they? Do you? Outrageous!!

pattiesimbeck and speedy1spdy, if he's not guilty, why in the world would he plead guilty?
I would spend the rest of my life in prison before I would plead guilty to something I did not do.

pattie-new kid, tac isn't judging him. he PLEADED GUILTY. in essence, you are now calling him a liar.
i know nothing about this man or this case, other than a victim said he committed the crime, and he pleaded guilty.
please don't be so quick to jump on the regular posters. all we have to go on is the 'facts' as stated. if one claims to be guilty, why would we believe otherwise?

I agree that Buddy Mack (MONSTER) Howell does need to pay for what he did to the child. Just because the child came forth for what he did to her does not mean that she came from a disfunctional family! She only did what she was suppose to do.We had also known Buddy for quite sometime and never thought he was capable of doing that to a child either, but why would an innocent child lie about something so cruel? Just because you know someone for a long period of time does not mean you know the person behind close doors. They can present themselves as kind, friendly, and loving and nice does not mean they can't do anything so awful. So I hope he gets everything he deserves.
