HODGES

Mayoral recount set for Monday

A recount of the town's mayoral race will be conducted Monday, officials said.

Hodges Town Clerk Frankie Petree said the council met in a special meeting Thursday night and agreed to conduct the recount at 1 p.m. at the Hodges Community Center.

The recount is necessary after a petition was filed Wednesday by Florence attorney Steve Graham, who represents Hodges resident Nick Howard.

Howard was beaten by a single vote, 58-57, in the race against incumbent Ed Crouch.

Officials with the Alabama League of Municipalities said the recount does not change the outcome of the election.

"It only gives the challenger grounds to contest the election," said Tracy Roberts, an attorney with the League of Municipalities.

Graham said his client is also preparing to file a formal petition to contest the election.

He said his client has issues with the way the election was held as well as he contends there were ineligible voters in the election.

"We anticipate filing the contest papers Monday, prior to the recount," Graham said.
