Some schools and offices closed for Columbus Day

It has been a federal holiday since 1971, yet Columbus Day still appears to slip up on most people
who expect to do business with certain governments on the second Monday in October.
Local county, state and federal government offices, including U.S. post offices, will be closed Monday to observe Columbus Day.
Local municipal government offices, however, will be open Monday.
Other offices or services that will be affected by the holiday:
- Municipal garbage collections will run on schedule.
- Garbage collections in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties will run as normal. Landfills in all three counties will be open at their normal hours.
- Franklin County Solid Waste’s billing office will be closed Monday.
- Franklin and Lauderdale county schools will be closed Monday.
- Colbert County schools will be in session Monday.
- Franklin County teachers will be conducting parent/teacher conferences.
- Lauderdale County teachers will be conducting parent/teacher conferences.
- The University of North Alabama will be open Monday, as will Northwest-Shoals Community College.
- Florence and Muscle Shoals city schools will be open Monday.
- Victory Christian School, Florence Christian Academy and St. Joseph’s Regional Catholic School will be open Monday.
- Tuscumbia and Russellville city schools will be closed Monday.
- Mars Hill Bible School, Riverhill School and Covenant Christian School will be closed Monday.
