Charge against former teacher/coach deferred

LAUDERDALE COUNTY - Court officials say a charge against former Central High School math teacher/coach Greg Brewer that was originally reported to the TimesDaily as dismissed, has actually been deferred.
Kyle Brown, chief assistant district attorney in Colbert County, prosecuted the case in a hearing March 20 whereby Brewer, 32, was accused of hugging, kissing and text-messaging a 12-year-old female student.
Included in the terms of the settlement in the case, which was held in Lauderdale County Juvenile Court, were directives for Brewer to immediately resign his position with the school system as a seventh-grade math teacher and surrender his Alabama teaching certificate. Both are effective June 2.
Brown said the charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor was deferred until June 2, at which time it will be dismissed if Brewer adheres to the terms of the settlement.
The terms dictate that he is to have no future contact with the girl.
Brown said Brewer admitted to each of the three offenses during the court hearing: texting inappropriate messages with sexual overtones, and hugging and kissing the girl.
"I expect Mr. Brewer to comply with the (terms of the) agreement," Brown said. "Because this is classified as a misdemeanor offense, he is not required to register as a sex offender."
According to a statement released by the legal department of the Alabama Department of Education, "any teaching certificate that is surrendered pursuant to misconduct by the teacher is treated as a permanent revocation by the State Department of Education."
The statement goes on to say that the revocation is reported to a national clearinghouse to which all states have access. Other states, therefore, are provided preliminary information that adverse action was taken against the person's certificate.
