Kayla Brooke King, Russellville, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Russellville High School, she was a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Future Business Leaders of America, newspaper staff, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Key Club and National Honor Society leadership symposium. She was science club secretary, Health Occupation Students of America and student council representative and recreation leader for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. The daughter of Randy and Valerie King, she plans to major in biology. Landon Chase Gilmer, Russellville, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior atRussellville High School, he was Future Teachers of America and International Thespian Society president, student council representative, show choir treasurer, who's who best all around, Physics Club advertiser, Christian Students United committee chairman and Power Team mentor. He was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Health Occupation Students of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, annual and newspaper staff, and student booster and Spanish clubs. The son of Larry and Beth Gilmer, he plans to major in education.
Lacey Smith, Anderson, received a Charles N. Martin Jr. endowed scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Lexington High School, she was homecoming queen, color guard captain, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America president, drama club treasurer, class secretary and member of Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, SECC, student council and band. The daughter of Marcus and Kathy Smith, she plans to major in business. Kathryn Elmore, Russellville, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Covenant Christian School, she was Key Club vice president, National Honor Society secretary and a member of the Alabama Youth Leadership Program. The daughter of Glen and Connie Elmore, she plans to major in nursing. Lauren MacKenzie Williams, Vina, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Red Bay High School, she was senior class secretary, Future Farmers of America president, Spanish Club secretary and a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions council, Leo Club and yearbook staff. The daughter of Gary and Phyllis Williams, she plansto major in elementary education.
Local student winners of the 2009 Alabama Letters About Literature contest, for students in fourth through 12th grades, were recognized at an award ceremony at the Alabama Book Festival in Montgomery. They include: Level III, grades 9-12, Alex Lindley, second, and Obianujunwa Anakwenze, third, both of Florence High School. Zachary Jordan, a senior double majoring in computer engineering and philosophy at Mississippi State University, received a $2,000 Tau Beta Pi scholarship. He serves as a student assistant for Dr. J.W. Bruce on research projects, competes on the intercollegiate Quiz Bowl team and helped found the Sound Society, to connect student musicians with an outlet for their talents. He is the son of Thomas W. and Barbara Jordan, Muscle Shoals. Local students receiving scholarships from the Alabama Home Builders Foundation, a charitable arm of the Home Builders Association of Alabama include:Florence - Jesse Payne, $500 to study carpentry at Northwest-Shoals Community College, son of Ralph and Ella Kaye Payne.
Lexington - Jordan Springer, $500 to study carpentry at Northwest-Shoals Community College, son of Phillip and Sherry Springer.
Moulton - Micah Steven Little, $500 to study electrical technology at Calhoun Community College, son of Steven and Melanie Little.
Muscle Shoals - Ben Bradford, $500 to study building science at the University of North Alabama, son of Roger and Debbie Bradford; Joshua Lee Keenum, $500 to study electrical technology at Calhoun Community College, son of General and Linda Keenum; and Tyler Wayne Murdock, $500 to study lectrical/carpentry/welding at Northwest-Shoals Community College, son of Jerry and Myran Murdock.
Rogersville - Wesley Kyle Birdwell, $500 to study HVAC at Calhoun Community College, son of Anthony and Carol Birdwell; and Matthew Phillips, $500 to study electrical technology at Northwest-Shoals Community College, son of Jamey and Tana Phillips.
Town Creek - Ryan Alexander Bracken, $250 to study drafting at Northwest-Shoals Community College, and son of Kevin and Estonia Saint; and Brandi Reed, $250 to study drafting at Northwest-Shoals Community College, and daughter of James and Lori Reed.
Chakia Bernice Stanley, received an associate's degree in radiology from Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham. A 2006 graduate of Cherokee High School, she was on the dean's list at the college. The daughter of Dexter and Monique Stanley, Cherokee, she is employed as a radiology tech at UAB Hospital. Allison B. Lawrence, Florence, was selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. She is a student at Florence High School. Membership is open only to students who have achieved superior academic excellence. Maggie Putman, Lexington, received an academic scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Rogers High School, she was a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Peers for Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Future Teachers of America and the Beta, science and Key clubs. She received the best smile and most popular awards in senior who's who. She is the daughter of Rickie and Lisa Putman. Dena Kaye Deaton, a senior at Red Bay High School, received the Bragwell Massey Scholarship from Country Cottage, Russellville. Open to graduates of Franklin County high schools planning to pursue a career in health care, the scholarship is a $250 cash award to be used at the college of recipient's choice. She plans to major in nursing. Mitzi Alexandrea Hembree, Trinity, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at East Lawrence High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and National Beta Club. She was Tau Alpha Gamma and spirit club president, Fellowship of Christian Athletes vice president, Diamond Doll chairwoman, varsity cheerleading captain, student ambassador, newspaper editor and yearbook co-editor. She received the NCA All American Cheerleader, Who's Who Among American High School Students, who's who in cheerleading, Miss ELHS and who's who most talented awards. The daughter of Jeff and Leah Hembree, she plans to major in elementary education. Laura S. Lopez, Russellville, received a presidential mentors academy endowed scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Russellville High School, she was a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Academic Excellence, overall A average, and received an art show 2008 honorable mention. The daughter of Alberto Francisco and Juana Lopez, she plans to major in secondary education. Ashley Flanagan, Phil Campbell, received the Kenneth B. Taylor Sr. Memorial Scholarship from Northwest-Shoals Community College. A graduate of Phil Campbell High School, she was a member of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was a cheerleader. The wife of Andrew Flanagan, she plans to major in nursing. Christy Melissa Clark, Bear Creek, received an academic scholarship fromNorthwest-Shoals Community College. A graduating senior at Phillips High School, she is student government vice president, prom queen, senior class reporter, senior who's who most spirited and friendliest, Miss Phillips High School, head cheerleader and Wendy's Heisman female school winner. She is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Teens Getting Involved for the Future. The daughter of Melissa Dotson and Bill Clark, she plans to major in registered nursing.

A graduating senior at Red Bay High School, she is senior class and Spanish club secretary, Future Farmers of America president and a member of Student Against Destructive Decisions council. Sheena M. Long, Florence, received the Brian Taylor Scholarship through the Foundation at Northwest-Shoals Community College. She attended Willow Run High School, where she was a member of the band. The daughter of Don and Teresa Long, she plans to major in computer information systems. Hannah Caroline Goad, Florence, received the Ashley Darby Memorial Scholarship through the Foundation at Northwest-Shoals Community College. A graduating senior at Brooks High School in Killen, she is senior class parliamentarian, homecoming queen, Miss BHS, Lioness, class favorite and head cheerleader. She is a member of Health Occupations Students of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America and the drama, foreign language and science clubs. Candace Barnett, Muscle Shoals, received a technology scholarship fromNorthwest-Shoals Community College. A graduating senior at Muscle Shoals High School, she is a member of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America and Skills USA. The daughter of Robert and Vanessa Barnett, she plans to major in cosmetology.
Heather Nicole Vandiver, Leighton, received an academic scholarship from Northwest-Shoals Community College. A senior at Colbert County High School, she is a member of National Honor Society, senior executive council and was selected who's who most talented. The daughter of Joseph W. and Freda G. Vandiver, she plans to major in art and computers. Ann Marie Lynch, Muscle Shoals, received an academic scholarship fromNorthwest-Shoals Community College. A graduating senior at Shoals Christian School, she plans to major in nursing. She is the daughter of David and Kristi Pearce and Eric Martin.
Local University of Alabama College of Education students initiated into the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Delta Epsilon, a nationally based honor fraternity, include: John Wayne Harris, Muscle Shoals; Sarabeth Jane Little, Florence; Krysta Dawn Orrick, Waterloo; Cassie L. Wells, Muscle Shoals; and Leigh Carmen Hester, Rogersville. Allison Hogue, Waterloo, received an academic scholarship fromNorthwest-Shoals Community College. A graduating senior at Waterloo High School, she is a member of Beta Club, Peers for Life, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the drama club. She is a varsity cheerleader. Olivia Coffey, Moulton, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Lawrence County High School, she was Miss Lawrence County High School and was voted best all around by the senior class. She received several sports awards, was named to honor rolls, attended the Hugh O'Brien Leadership conference and was an alternate for Girl's State. The daughter of Arnold Jr. and Susan Coffey, she plans to major in secondary education. Kodi Steven Chandler, Moulton, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at West Morgan High School, he is senior class and student council president and co-editor of the school newspaper. He is a member of Family Career and Community Leaders of America and the alto saxophone section leader. The son of Steve and Gina Chandler, he plans to major in English/language arts. Brandon M. Hester, Russellville, received a full-tuition leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Belgreen High School, he served as a Boy's State representative and on the Franklin County School superintendent advisory committee. He was voted who's who most likely to succeed, was Mr. Belgreen High School alternate and named to the National Honor Roll. He received the U.S. Achievement Academy national history and government award and is in the academic top five. He is a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students and American Mathematics Students. He received best of show and first place in Present it with Power at 4-H State Congress competitions. The son of Jack and Lei-anne Hester, he plans to major in biology with a minor in chemistry. The daughter of James and Kathy Ford, she plans to major in chemistry with a minor in biology. Brooke Ford, Florence, received a leadership scholarship from the University of North Alabama. A graduating senior at Mars Hill Bible School, she was a member of National Honor Society, student council, Peers for Life, Spanish Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Christian Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Berean Society, book club, senior high chorus, show choir and pep club. She a Grid Iron Girl, participated in Youth Leadership Shoals and is a member of National Society of High School Scholars. The daughter of James and Kathy Ford, she plans to major in chemistry with a minor in biology. Roy Rudolph, Muscle Shoals, has been selected to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a year-long, federally-funded fellowship for study and work in Germany. Rudolph is affiliated with AuburnUniversity.
The University of North Alabama chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society recently initiated 65 new members.The honor society recognizes and honors good character and outstanding achievement by students, faculty and alumni through election to membership and through various awards for distinguished achievements.
