Debra Anderson-Gore is the circulation manager for the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.
As circulation manager of the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library, Debra Anderson-Gore stays on her feet all day, making sure the library is in order and patrons’ needs are met. She also is the mother of three sons, two of whom still live at home. So when it is time to go home, she doesn’t get to rest.
Anderson-Gore has worked for the library for six years. Every day is fairly routine, but she says she enjoys her job and enjoys helping others. Anderson-Gore is in charge of the circulation staff and does everything from checking books in and out to requesting new books be added to the collection.
Her duties include setting up various displays.
Since the library began a clothing drive to benefit the Scope 310 bookstore, Anderson-Gore has been helping with that, but she took a few minutes out of her day to describe a typical day in the life a librarian.
5:30 a.m. – Wake up, get ready and cook breakfast.
7-7:15 a.m. – Take my 9-year-old son to school. Then I come back home and do some laundry and other housework before leaving for work.
8:30-10 a.m. – The staff meets before the library opens to do our opening procedures, which includes turning on the computer and responding to any e-mail, sorting the book carts and checking in books. I also make sure the meeting rooms are open, the cash drawer is counted and the circulation desk has its daily supplies. Finally, I do a walk-through to make sure everything is in order.
10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. – The library opens and I continue to check books in and out. I empty the book drop and look up books for patrons on our computer system. Helping patrons find books and helping callers or visitors with information is a big part of my duties.
2:30-3:30 p.m. – Lunch. I also pick up my youngest son from school during my lunch break.
3:30-7 p.m. – Back to work. Time to check the book drop again. This is checked about five times a day. I also check patrons in and out and spend a great deal of time answering the phone: People wanting to know if we have certain books, wanting books put on hold, and, if we don’t have a book, I suggest other bookstores that might.
7-7:30 p.m. – Library closes. (This is for Monday-Thursday. The library has different hours Friday-Sunday.) Do closing procedures. Make sure the building is empty and orderly.
7:30-7:45 p.m. – Go home. Sometimes I stop by the grocery store or pick up something to eat.
7:45-8:30 p.m. – Cook dinner. Spaghetti is a family favorite. Check my son’s homework while dinner is cooking.
8:30-9:30 p.m. – Have family time. Read stories or maybe have my kids show me how to play the Wii.
9:30-10 p.m. – Get ready for bed. Our family tries to pack a lot into the short time we have together, so I’m always tired.
