WINFIELD - Even with senior running back Lane Canerday recording 105 yards rushing on 17 carries, the Wilson Warriors were unable to end a five-game losing streak by falling

to Winfield 36-7 on Thursday.

The Warriors (2-8) threatened early in the loss to Winfield following a 43-yard

run on the second play

from scrimmage from Canerday. But the Pirates defense

stiffened and the Warriors would not threaten

again until the waning 3 minutes of the contest after Winfield had the game well in hand.

Senior Coby Dozier led the Pirates offensive attack with 136 yards rushing and two scores, but the first score of the night was recorded by senior quarterback Jacob Handley, who capped a 13-play drive covering 79 yards with a 3-yard keeper around the left end.

The Pirates would return to the end zone on their third series of the night following a 62-yard connection between Handley and Reggie Nalls as Winfield would take a 14-0 lead at intermission.

The Warriors would finally mark the scoreboard with 3:12 to play following a short 1-yard pass from junior quarterback Mac Ezell to senior Dillon Erwin.

The 65-yard scoring drive was built on consecutive pass plays.

only a snap earlier in the drive.

Ezell tossed a 41-yard strike down the opposing sideline on a fourth-and-22 before finding freshman Clayton Strait on a 19-yard catch and run to the Pirates one.

Winfield will now entertain Colbert County in the opening round of the state playoffs next Friday.
