MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Montgomery police searched a landfill in Salem for an infant's body Monday after saying they have reason to believe a newborn might have been placed in the trash.
Major Huey Thornton told the Opelika-Auburn News Tuesday night that the initial search in Lee County was suspended after no evidence was found. He said officials would meet Wednesday to
The investigation began after a hospital reported that a pregnant woman came in on Oct. 19 but she refused the doctor's advice that she should deliver the baby then. She signed a waiver and left.
"The doctor advised her that she needed to deliver that day ... she came back approximately a week later. She came back complaining of a cold," Thornton said.
She was not pregnant on the second visit and area hospitals were checked to see if the woman had given birth but no records were found.
"We have reason to believe the baby may have been delivered and placed in the trash," Thornton said. He said the woman is not in custody because officials are waiting until a body is found before filing charges.
