James Wesley Elam was called from labor to refreshment by the Great Architect of the Universe on Oct. 30, 2009, at the age of 88 after an extended illness.

Married to the recently deceased Mary H. Elam for 66 years, who passed away just three weeks ago, he leaves behind two sons, Phil and Dr. Jimmy Elam; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Deborah, Ashley and Michael Elam; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Sidney McAlister; three sisters-in-law, Johnnie Hearn, Ella Mae DeGraw and Elizabeth Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He served as a combat engineer under Gen. George Patton and was awarded four Bronze Stars for "conspicuous bravery in the face of the enemy" and individual heroism during World War II. He was employed by Trailways and Greyhound Buslines for more than 50 years. Brother Elam was a 60-plus year member of the Masonic Fraternity and served as High Priest of Keystone Royal Arch Masons.

A private service was held, and he and his wife will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, with full military honors. A memorial service for both will be held in the future.
