I read with horror and disgust the articles regarding the rapes in Dakar, Senegal and Richmond Calif. Such atrocities must be stopped. One wonders how to do this and I say: "Start with respecting ourselves and each other as valuable human beings."

Rape is a crime, not just in Dakar and Richmond, but here in the Shoals as well. Anyone who is raped in our area should avail themselves of the free services of Rape Response. Rape Response is a nonprofit organization that makes available free forensic exams and confidential advocate support. Call the Crisis Line at (256) 767-1100.

A T-shirt I read at last weeks International Association of Forensic Nurses Conference in Atlanta said: "NO MEANS NO, NO NEVER MEANS YES, NO NEVER MEANS MAYBE. AGAINST YOUR WILL. AGAINST THE LAW!" All of human kind needs to embrace this.
