Lawyer says ex-Ala. mayor rejected plea deal

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A defense lawyer says former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford rejected a plea bargain in his federal trial on bribery charges because he maintained that he had not broken the law.
Attorney Glennon Threatt, who represented Langford, said Tuesday that Langford's reaction to the government's offer was that he had done nothing wrong.
Threatt told The Birmingham News a plea deal would have required Langford to admit guilt and give prosecutors information on anything he might know about public corruption. Prosecutors say they can't discuss the case.
After an eight-day trial in Tuscaloosa, a federal jury found Langford guilty last week on all 60 counts of bribery, conspiracy, tax evasion and fraud. Threatt says Langford is disappointed but remains in good spirits.
