TVA to conduct emergency exercise

TVA and other federal, state and local agencies will conduct a regularly scheduled emergency preparedness exercise today for Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

The exercise will involve about 1,000 Tennessee Valley Authority and state of Alabama employees and emergency responders in Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties.

Residents may see radiological monitoring teams or other responders in action as part of the exercise and may hear on-site and off-site sirens.

Representatives of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will evaluate responders on the appropriateness of their actions to ensure the health and safety of the public.

The emergency exercise is part of a long-term drill and exercise program. Utilities operating nuclear power plants are required by the NRC to conduct emergency exercises annually.

FLORENCE

Former Tide athlete to speak

Former University of Alabama football standout Siran Stacy will speak at 6 p.m. Sunday at Florence First United Methodist Church.

The event is free and open to the public.

Stacy will share his story of how he has coped with his grief after his wife and four of his five children were killed in 2007 when a drunken driver slammed into the van he was driving.

Junior League has Apple Annie day

The Junior League of the Shoals will host its annual Apple Annie Day fundraiser Friday in Colbert and Lauderdale counties.

This is the 68th year for the annual charity that features red stocking-clad women selling apples and providing funds to local nonprofit organizations.

The Junior League is an organization of women. Among other initiatives, the organization is dedicated to improving the community through volunteering and charitable actions.

Apples can be purchased in crates of 80 for $55 or half crates for $40. Bags of five applies may be purchased for $5.
