Miss Mary Elizabeth "Mert" Mullins, of Florence, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009.
Miss Mullins was a native of Huntsville. She graduated from Florence State Teachers College and taught first grade in the Muscle Shoals school system for 37 years.
Miss Mullins was a devoted member of Highland Baptist Church and has always volunteered her time and talents to church work. She was committed to missions and supported them prayerfully as well as financially by making many contributions to her missionary friends. Miss Mullins was an advocate for the handicapped and the elderly. She had a God-given talent for helping those in need. She worked with Women's Missionary Union, Recreation Ministry and Girls in Action.
Miss Mullins was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Dewey Fanning Mullins.
She is survived by her brother, Roy L. Fanning Sr.; nieces, Sandra Drake and Judith Grisham; nephew, Roy L. Fanning Jr.
"Aunt Mert" was adored by all, especially her great-nieces and nephews, Susan Martin, Debbie Freeman, Patrice Sandridge, Donald Botta and Samuel Botta.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Elkins Funeral Home, of Florence. The service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Revs. John Brock and Chris Underwood officiating. The burial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Highland Baptist Church building fund or Direct Missions fund.
