Hubbard gets its seventh shutout

COURTLAND - R.A. Hubbard's defense continued its impressive play, posting its seventh shutout of the season as the Chiefs defeated Parrish 21-0 in the opening round of the Class 1A playoffs.

R.A. Hubbard (9-2) limited Parrish to just five yards of offense in the first half and 115 yards overall. Thomas Goode rushed for 163 yards on 24 carries to spark the Chiefs' offense.

The Chiefs took an early 7-0 lead when Goode scored on a 2-yard run. It would be all of the scoring in the first half.

Parrish (7-4) appeared to be driving for a tying score in the third quarter. The Tornadoes moved inside the Hubbard 10, but Nickoli Davenport intercepted a pass near the goal line and returned it 30 yards.

Hubbard then drove 70 yards, with Goode scoring on a 3-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0.

The Chiefs added a 39-yard touchdown pass from L.J. Hampton to Clifton Benford to make it 21-0 in the fourth quarter.

Kayln Sanders led the defensive effort with 15 total tackles.

Hubbard will host Berry in next week's second round.

Hackleburg 43, Vina 14

HACKLEBURG - The No. 6-ranked Panthers (11-0) remained unbeaten with a convincing win over the Red Devils (4-7) to open the Class 1A playoffs behind a three-touchdown performance from Ryan Bullock.

Bullock was 13-of-16 for 188 yards and two TDs while also running for another score. Joel Ingle rushed for 198 yards on just 12 carries for three more touchdowns.

In all, the Panthers rolled up 301 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Jay Skinner led a tough Hackleburg defense that forced four turnovers and allowed 88 yards rushing. Skinner led the team with a pair of sacks.

Bullock opened the scoring on an 11-yard touchdown run with 1:21 to play in the first quarter. Just 30 seconds into the second quarter, Bullock hit Trevor Holland on a 47-yard TD pass, putting Hackleburg up 13-0. Less than four minutes later, the Panthers went up 20-0 as Bullock hit Clint Frederick for a 41-yard touchdown strike.

Ingle closed the first half with a pair of touchdown runs, a 15-yard run with 6:41 to play and a 25-yarder as time expired in the half with the Panthers up 33-0.

Ingle got Hackleburg on the board again late in the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown run, and Hackleburg led 40-0 heading to the fourth.

Vina finally got on the board in the fourth when Joseph Barksdale recovered a fumble in the end zone. Brent Townsend added a 2-point conversion, and the Red Devils trailed 40-8.

Bullock kicked a 24-yard field goal to cap a long Hackleburg drive with 5:02 to play. Vina responded with a 28-yard TD run by Townsend with 2:14 to play.

Berry 56, Phillips 34

BERRY - Tank Hollingsworth rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns and caught another touchdown as Berry rolled over the Phillips Bears in the opening round.

Quarterback Jacob Kennedy followed Hollingsworth with 148 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also passed for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Hollingsworth scored on runs of 87 and 67 yards, while Kennedy scored on runs of 10, 69, 1 and 19 yards. Kennedy threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Hollingsworth and a 57-yard scoring pass to David Morrison.

The Wildcats built a comfortable 44-14 lead by the end of the third quarter.
