Pirates shut down Indians' offense

WINFIELD — Despite earning only a single first down and 25 total yards in the opening half of their Class 3A playoff opener, the Colbert County Indians managed to stay within 6 points of Winfield at intermission.
But the Pirates added two scores in the second half and continued to shut down the Indians' offense en route to a 21-0 victory on Friday.
With the loss, the Indians ended the season with a 4-7 mark while recording the program's first opening-round loss in the state playoffs since 1998, breaking a streak of 10 consecutive wins.
Winfield (8-3) will hit the road next week to face fifth-ranked and unbeaten Madison Academy.
While Winfield failed to score on the game's opening drive, the Pirates managed to consume more than 6 minutes from the Estes Hudson Stadium clock before turning the ball over to Colbert County at the Indians 38.
Three plays later, junior Mercier Thomas shanked a four-yard punt for the Indians, leaving the Pirates with a short field to travel for the game's first score.
Using a methodical ground attack, Winfield used eight plays to cover the 39 yards with senior quarterback Jacob Handley sliding in from two yards out over right tackle.
A high snap on the conversion try prevented junior kicker Cager Weeks from adding the extra point, leaving the Pirates with a 6-0 advantage with 10:35 to play in the second quarter.
Neither squad would score for the remainder of the half with the Indians having few chances as the visiting squad would take only 14 offensive snaps before the half.
“Offensively, we have really struggled all season,” Colbert County coach Cody Gross said immediately after the postseason loss.
“Winfield is really good at what they do. They are really a disciplined team and simply do what they are supposed to do. When your team does not do your job, they make you pay. We could not match up with them.”
But even with the Pirates' defense shutting down the Indians in the opening half, there was little breathing room for Winfield until the final stanza.
Handley connected with junior receiver Reggie Nalls on a 35-yard scoring strike to cap an 11-play, 61-yard drive with 6:01 to play followed by a five-yard run by Handley with 1:46 left in the contest.
Both offenses struggled with the Pirates accounting for 224 total yards — 191 on the ground and 33 through the air, while the Indians churned out a meager 113 total yards with 69 coming on the ground and 44 yards passing.
