HAMILTON — A year ago, Hamilton made it to the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs.
The Aggies are off to a pretty good start this year, too.
Bud Coleman ran for two scores and caught a touchdown pass for a third to help the Aggies down Colbert Heights 31-20 in their playoff opener Friday night.
Hamilton (10-1) finished with 423 total yards and scored the game’s final 18 points to advance to the second round. The Aggies will host Elkmont, a 56-7 winner over Vinemont, in the second round.
The Aggies were pretty good defensively, too, intercepting five passes and limiting the Wildcats (7-4) to 163 total yards.
Hamilton quickly put Colbert Heights in a 13-0 hole as Coleman scored on a 6-yard run and a 76-yard option pass from Ryan King to Derrick Doss.
Colbert Heights came back to tie it in the second quarter. Cameron Handley capped a 76-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats, who followed that score with a fumble recovery that Matt Smith eventually turned into a 1-yard touchdown run.
Coleman’s 18-yard touchdown run broke the tie and Mitch Stults followed that score with a 29-yard pass to Coleman for a 25-13 halftime lead.
Stults put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a 5-yard run.
Colbert Heights cut the lead to 31-20 with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Smith, but that was as close as the Wildcats could get.
