COLLINWOOD, Tenn. — Jacob Davis threw four touchdown passes as Collinwood cruised to a 48-0 victory over McEwen in the opening round of the Tennessee state
playoffs.
The win sets up a rematch with county rival Wayne County next week. The two teams played in the regular season finale with Wayne County winning 28-14.
“It's awesome for us to get to play Wayne County again,” Collinwood coach Michael Statom said. “When you lose to a big rival you have that hunger to play them again, and it is rare to get that chance in football, especially against a team 12 miles down the road. It is such a good rivalry and this is a great thing for our community.”
While Davis led the Trojan offense, Collinwood's defense forced four turnovers and did not allow McEwen to cross midfield the entire game.
Davis got the Trojans started quickly, throwing to Seth Chambers on a fake field goal for a 10-yard touchdown that put Collinwood up 7-0.
Later in the first quarter, Davis hit Chase Roberson for an 8-yard scoring pass to make it 14-0. A 2-yard scoring run by Max Risner gave Collinwood a 21-0 halftime advantage.
Davis had scoring passes of 39 yards to Caleb Clark and 27 yards to Roberson to extend the lead to 35-0 in the third quarter.
Jacob Daniel added an 8-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter and Colby Lange returned a McEwen fumble 52 yards for the final score of the night.
Davis was 11 of 13 for 168 yards and the four touchdowns.
Lawrence County 12, Craigmont 7
LAWRENCEBURG — Special teams helped make Lawrence County's first trip to the playoffs since 1986 a successful one Friday night, setting up a pair of touchdowns in the Wildcats's win against Craigmont.
Next up for Lawrence County, which won the first postseason game in school history, is Mitchell out of Memphis.
“It was great to get the monkey off our backs to get into the playoffs, and then we had play defense to get the first playoff win in school history,” coach David Marston said. “It's just a great win for us.”
Lawrence County's defense played an important role in the win, collecting three turnovers and limiting Craigmont to 217 total yards. Offensively, the Wildcats managed only 178 total yards — all on the ground.
Trent Garland had 74 yards on 12 rushes and Harry Douglas added 63 yards on 12 carries against a tough Craigmont defense.
A shanked punt set up the game's first score with Logan Taylor capping a three-play, 20-yard drive with a 15-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Lawrence County went ahead 12-0 at the half with Tyler Bosheer blocked a punt and Zack Martin grabbed it and raced 16 yards for a touchdown.
Craigmont cut the lead to 12-7 in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Logan Schaar to Corey Greer.
Garland sealed the win with an interception at the LCHS 15 in the closing seconds.
