Phillips opens with win

Alex Fragale scored 10 points in the first quarter to help Phillips take control en route to a season-opening 77-43 victory over Vina on Friday night.

The Bears led 23-10 after one quarter and 39-16 at

halftime. Matt Gilbert then hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the third

quarter as Phillips (1-0) pulled away.

Gilbert led Phillips with 21 points, followed by Trent Williams with 14 and Alex Fragale with 12. Patrick White scored 11 and Brent Townsend 10 for Vina.

Girls

n Belgreen 71, Covenant Christian 33: Belgreen had 11 different players score as the Bulldogs cruised past Covenant Christian.

The Bulldogs led 30-15 at halftime and put the game away by outscoring the Eagles 26-8 in the third quarter.

Eric Smith scored 13 points and Amber Smith 10 to lead the Bulldogs (2-0). Anna Clair Noblit scored 17 to pace the Eagles (1-1).

n Phillips 62, Vina 20: Phillips held Vina to just five points in the second half in pounding the Red Devils.

Kaitlyn Atkins scored 22 points to lead Phillips. Tiffany Chambers added 18 and Erica Martin 10 for the Bears.

n Itawamba 76, NW-Shoals 58: Northwest-Shoals saw its record fall to 2-2 with a loss at Itawamba Community College.

The Patriots trailed 36-22 at halftime and were never able to make a run at the Indians.

Jermaine Hooks led the Patriots with 22 points and Robert Barnes added 10.

NW-Shoals will play No. 13 Chipola (Fla.) on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Patriot Center.

n Itawamba CC 84, NW-Shoals 69 (W): The Patriots lost for the first time in five games after falling behind 43-30 at the half.

"It was just an off night all the way around," coach Kristy Ward said "We didn't shoot well; we didn't get after them on defense; we lacked intensity.

Jasmine Horne led Northwest-Shoals (4-1) with 16 points. China McDaniel added 14 and Charnise Mitchell scored 11. ReRe Bell scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Noel Prestage led ICC with 20 points. Natasha Berry added 17, while Lori Crudup had 14.
