Colbert Heights coasts past Sheffield

SHEFFIELD - Josh Balta and Lucas Stonecipher led Colbert Heights in a prolific performance from 3-point range, as the Wildcats downed Sheffield 71-41 in boys high school basketball action Monday night.
Balta went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, while Stonecipher finished 4-for-7 in the Class 3A, Area 16 win for Colbert Heights (5-2, 1-1). Both players finished with a team-high 16 points. Balta also had nine rebounds.
The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 in the first quarter, led 27-14 at halftime and 50-25 after three quarters.
Dee Liner led four scorers with a game-high 17 points for Sheffield (0-2, 0-1).
Colbert Heights will play at Cherokee today.
Brooks 41, Lexington 37: Brooks made nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to put away a season-opening win.
Brooks led 19-17 at halftime and 27-24 after three quarters.
Matthew Scott scored a team-high 11 points for Brooks (1-0).
Hunter Roberson's 11 points paced Lexington (1-4).
Rogers 80, Clements 48: Trevor Conley scored a game-high 25 points and sank four 3-pointers, and Rogers jumped on Clements in the first half en route to a blowout win.
The Pirates outscored the Colts 24-8 in the first quarter and led 47-21 at halftime.
Terry Robinson scored 17 points and Tyler Jones added 13 for Rogers (2-1).
Lamac Askins and Luke Moore scored 12 points each for Clements.
Tharptown 68, Red Bay 57: Jacob Parker scored 14 first half points en route to a season-high 25 points as Tharptown defeated Red Bay.
Trailing by four points early in the second quarter, Parker scored five straight points to give Tharptown (4-3) a lead they would never relinquish.
Cory Timbs had 12 points in the loss for Red Bay (1-2), while Curtis Morrell added 11 points and Cody Reynolds 10.
Girls
Brooks 48, Lexington 36: Brooks handled Lexington's press and got big shot from bench players to spark a momentum-seizing third-quarter run.
The Lions (5-0) outscored the Golden Bears 15-4 in the third quarter, getting 3-pointers by Chris Lucing and K'maya Roach off the bench.
Miranda Liles had a double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds) for Brooks.
Lexington's Katie Wallace led all scorers with 12 points.
Brooks will host Ardmore tonight in its Class 4A, Area 15 opener.
Haleyville 43, Fayette County 11: Haleyville switched to a half-court trap defense in the fourth quarter and frustrated Fayette County, forcing turnovers and outscoring the Tigers 25-0 in the final period.
Haleyville (3-3) outscored Fayette County (0-2) 29-2 in the second half.
Tori Batchelor finished with a game-high 11 points for the Lions. Sara Beth Rhudy's 7 points paced the Tigers.
Sheffield 67, Colbert Heights 38: Maya Armstead scored a game-high 21 points for Sheffield, and the Bulldogs pounced on Colbert Heights early to run away with a win in their Class 3A, Area 16 opener.
Sheffield (1-1) outscored Colbert Height (0-4) 20-7 in the first quarter and 18-8 in the third quarter.
Nyesha Ricks (11) and Ebony Shannon (10) each scored in double digits for the Bulldogs.
Kristen Claunch and Danielle Bryant led the Wildcats with 13 points each.
Clements 71, Rogers 30: Three players scored in double figures as No. 2 Clements opened a 47-13 halftime lead en route to a big over Rogers.
DaNeshia Malone scored 21 points for the Colts (7-1), while Chelsea Haggermaker and Jordan Beggs added 16 points each.
Brianna Scott had 10 points in the loss for Rogers (2-2).
Rogers will continue play on Friday at Brooks.
Red Bay 54, Tharptown 49: Caitlin Childers scored 15 points and Whitney Childers had 14 points and seven rebounds as Red Bay defeated Tharptown.
Morgan McKinney added 12 points for the Tigers, who improved to 2-3 with the win.
Chelsea McCluskey had a game-high 19 points in the loss for Tharptown (5-2), while Kendra Baker added 13 points.
Junior college
MUSCLE SHOALS - Starting in the absence of leading scorer China McDaniel, freshman guard Nikkia Jordan scored 18 points and dished 10 assists Northwest Shoals defeated Northeast Mississippi 108-74 to improve to 7-3 on the season.
"Being without a player like China means other girls on the floor have to step up," Northwest-Shoals coach Kristy Ward said. "Tonight that job fell on Nikkia. She hasn't played much point guard since she joined our team, but tonight she was great."
Briana Walker had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Patriots, who outscored Northeast Mississippi 54-33 in the first half.
Erin Parrish and Tamaya Thompson each added 15 points.
Al'Lisha Hudson had a game-high 20 points in the loss for Northeast Mississippi.
Northwest-Shoals will travel to play Chattanooga State on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
