When Sam Phillips left Florence, he had big plans. To say he fulfilled those plans would be a huge understatement.
Phillips became known in the music world as the "Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll." He is credited with changing the face of music in the world.
He started famed Sun Records in Memphis. Along the way, he discovered such talents as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Roy Orbinson, Charlie Rich, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins and numerous others.
Phillips died in 2003, but his memory has not vanished. Each year, the Shoals honors him and his contributions to the music world during the Sam Phillips Commemoration Week. The celebration is held in conjunction with Phillips’ birthday, which was Jan. 5, 1923.
The event has attracted visitors from Canada, England and other countries. It features concerts, discussions about Phillips and his music, a birthday party and numerous other activities.
