The Shoals honors one of its own, Helen Keller, during a June festival each year. Keller is known as America’s "First Lady of Courage" for her ability to overcome a rare childhood disease that left her blind and deaf.
The festival, which began in 1979, is hailed by some tourism officials as the best live music/art festival in Alabama. In addition to entertainment and the arts and crafts show, athletic events, a parade and art exhibits are held in conjunction with the celebration. The combination attracts more than 75,000 people each year, organizers say.
Performances of William Gibson’s world-renowned drama "The Miracle Worker" are also held in conjunction with the event. For more than 30 years, the play unfolds outdoors on weekend nights in June and July at the historic grounds of Ivy Green, which was the childhood home of Keller. The two-hour show recounts the efforts of Keller’s teacher, Anne Sullivan, who managed to open the doors to communication for Keller.
The play, which provides an unforgettable experience, includes period attire, authentic sets and professional actors. There is a charge for the play of $10 for reserved seats and $7 for general admission.
