Most everyone knows music from “The Nutcracker.” They just may not realize they do. Tunes from Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1892 ballet are ubiquitous during the holidays, playing throughout commercials, movies and department stores. Shoppers may recognize the number “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” but chances are some would be hard-pressed to explain the plot of “The Nutcracker,” not to mention how the Sugar Plum Fairy comes into play.
