DECATUR — A Tennessee Valley Authority official acknowledged Wednesday some safety measures were not in place when an Athens man was struck and killed by a low-hanging utility wire while boating Tuesday evening on the Tennessee River.

TVA Vice President of Operations Justin Maierhofer said there were no warning lights or signs of possible danger when workers began lifting a new transmission line across the river about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Only two TVA boats were patrolling the area.
