Hannah Oberlies, of Killen, recently completed the quintessential course, the first offered by the National Outdoor Leadership School. The 30-day wilderness course was held June 11-July 11 in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. Oberlies' group of 12 students and three instructors began their course learning basic wilderness techniques such as, cooking and stove use, camping, map reading and Leave No Trace techniques. The curriculum moved on to more in-depth instruction - route finding, expedition behavior and discussing environmental issues while identifying plants and animals. Most of students' time was spent backpacking 100 miles, but fly-fishing and rock climbing were also taught during their course.
