Muscle Shoals will soon receive a new custom pumper fire truck to bring the city’s fleet up to date.
The city accepted a bid Monday from Sunbelt Fire to pay $396,629 for the truck that will replace a 1987 pumper.
The money to pay for the truck will come out of the city’s surplus fund and was approved during budget hearing for the city.
Muscle Shoals Mayor David Bradford said if the city didn’t replace the 25-year-old truck, Muscle Shoals residents could see increased insurance costs because of a lower fire rating.
The new truck will be housed at Station 1 on Avalon Avenue.
“That station makes the most runs and the equipment sees the most use,” Bradford said.
The truck should be ready within 210 days, according to the accepted bid. Once the replacement truck arrives, the old pumper truck will likely be used at the Muscle Shoals Regional Fire Training Center on Central Avenue.
