Ethics Commission: Hackleburg mayor misused city equipment
By Mary Sell Montgomery Bureau

HACKLEBURG - Mayor Doug Gunnin may have to pay a $1,000 fine after he admitted to using city-owned property for personal use, a state agency confirmed today.

“A complaint was filed against (Gunnin), alleging he had used city equipment to haul gravel to his daughter’s residence,” said Hugh Evans, general counsel for the Alabama Ethics Commission.

Gunnin acknowledged that he did it, Evans said this afternoon.

“He requested his case be handled administratively (by the Ethics Commission),” Evans said.

The local district attorney's office must sign off on the decision, but Gunnin could be fined up to $1,000.

That money will go to the city.

Gunnin’s job is not in jeopardy.

“It is a minor violation, which is not even a misdemeanor,” Evans said.

Evans did not have details about when the misuse happened.

Gunnin could not immediately be reached this afternoon for comment.
