CHEROKEE -- An explosion has been reported at the Nitrate Plant north of Cherokee in the section of the plant where ammonia is made.
The explosion reportedly knocked the roof off and blew out the windows, according to emergency workers at the scene.
"It knocked me out of my recliner," said Michael Davis Smith, of Cherokee.
Nancy Giles said her husband was once the plant manager. When they heard the explosion, he knew exactly what had happened, she said.
"When we heard it, it scared us to death," she said.
Effects of the explosion could be felt as far away as Zip City in Lauderdale County.
No fire has been reported in connection with the explosion.
