MONTGOMERY — Republican leadership in the Alabama House today outlined its agenda for the 2013 legislative session, which it said is designed to repel the “left-leaning” federal government.
The GOP’s theme for the session that begins next month is “We Dare Defend Our Rights” and includes about a dozen proposed acts and amendments, including: The Women’s Health and Safety Act that would put tougher regulations on abortion clinics; the Alabama Firearms Protection Amendment; the Local Control School Flexibility Act; and the Medicaid Block Grant Compact, which Republicans say would put more control of Medicaid spending in the state’s hands.
House Minority Leader Micky Hammon, R-Decatur, helped craft the agenda and he said he believes most Alabamians will be in favor of it.
“I am confident we are in tune with the people of the state of Alabama,” Hammon said.
House Speaker Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, said that the proposals outlined will take priority and be voted on above any other proposed legislation.
