Grammy awards will have several Shoals connections
Staff reports

If you take in the 50th anniversary of the Grammy awards on television tonight, dont be surprised if you see some familiar faces from the Shoals.

And you might even see one or two of them holding a Grammy.

Evidence of the resurgence of the Muscle Shoals music industry will be evident during the telecast, which will be begin at 7 p.m. on WHNT-TV.

The telecast will include a Cornerstones of Rock performance in which Creedence Clearwater Revival founder John Fogerty will jam with rock n roll pioneers Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

That segment will feature two Shoals musicians on lead guitar Kelvin Holly, of Florence, and Kenny Lovelace, a Cloverdale native.

Holly still tours with Little Richard, and Lovelace has been Lewis band leader for the past 40 years.

Greenhill native Chris Tompkins is also nominated in two categories Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year for writing Before He Cheats, a hit by Carrie Underwood.

Tompkins was a co-writer on the song with Tennessee resident Josh Kear.

Tompkins was already in California on Friday and will be in attendance at tonights ceremony. He downplayed his chances during a brief conversation with a TimesDaily reporter. He said he didnt want to get his hopes too high, although he conceded that winning a Grammy would be a thrill.

I want all my friends and family that know me to keep their fingers crossed, and even those who dont know me, said Tompkins, who has been living in Nashville for the past five years.

There will be another Shoals connection at the event. The Shoals-bred rockers Drive-by Truckers are also involved in a Grammy nomination. The group produced and provided the music for Scene of the Crime, the comeback album for R&B/soul singer Bettye Lavette. Their work is nominated in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category.

The album was recorded at FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals.

Patterson Hood, of the Drive-by Truckers, produced the album. He also played guitar during the recording and was joined by bass player Shonna Tucker and guitarist Mike Cooley. All three are Shoals natives.
