ROGERSVILLE — Two men were assaulted and robbed early Wednesday at a Rogersville home on the shore of Wheeler Lake, authorities said.
Lauderdale County sheriff’s investigator Clifford Whitten said neither man was seriously hurt, but they reported four men wearing hoods and gloves stole two pistols and about $500 in cash after the assault.
“We’re still trying to talk to one of the men to hopefully get more information, but we haven’t been able to do that at this point,” Whitten said Wednesday afternoon.
He said the two men were asleep in separate bedrooms and were unable to get a look at the face of any of the intruders.
The home invasion reportedly occurred just before 1 a.m. on Lakeshore Drive.
Whitten said there was no visible evidence of forced entry.
“They apparently just went in,” he said. “One of the men knocked on the bedroom door of the owner and whispered ‘I’m back.’ They went in and started hitting him, and later robbed him and his friend, who was spending the night.”
Whitten said it was not immediately known if a weapon was used during the assault.
The owner of the house received medical treatment at Athens-Limestone Hospital and was later released, authorities said. They did not know if the other man received treatment.
“The owner told us he hasn’t had trouble with anyone,” Whitten said.
Investigators said they are trying to find a late-1990s model blue Caprice that a neighbor reported seeing about the time of the incident. Whitten said the neighbor, who lives nearly a half mile away, called the vehicle suspicious.
“We’re not sure if it’s related to the case, but the men could have parked their car there, gone to the victim’s house and returned,” he said.
Sheriff Ronnie Willis said the four men planned the invasion well. He said it’s possible the homeowner knows one or more of the intruders.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 256-760-5757 or Shoals Area Crime Stoppers at 256-386-8685.
