Killen receives accolade

Rogers linebacker Raleigh Killen received another football accolade recently when he was named to the Military.com All-DoD Team.

In its first year in existence, the All-DoD team is made up of 24 high school football players who are currently dependents of active military personnel around the globe.

“I was real excited when I found out,” Killen said. “It’s a big honor because they only select so many people from all branches of the military worldwide. It means a lot to me.”

Raleigh’s father, Brad Killen, is an Army lieutenant colonel stationed at Redstone Arsenal. A Greenhill native and Rogers alumnus, Brad Killen was transferred to Redstone from Washington D.C. in 2009 and relocated his family to Greenhill, from where he commutes to work.

All-DoD nominees had to submit highlight videos and were selected by a panel of former NFL coaches and players, including wide receiver Wes Chandler (Saints, Chargers, 49ers), offensive lineman David Diaz-Infante (Chargers, Broncos, Eagles), kicker Michael Husted (Buccaneers, Raiders, Redskins, Chiefs), former Bucs and Bengals head coach Sam Wyche and former Bills defensive coordinator Thurmond Moore.

“That was pretty neat,” Raleigh Killen said of being selected by former pros. “They know what they’re looking for, so when they see something they like, it means something. So that’s a big honor, too.”

Killen totaled 163 tackles and five sacks at middle linebacker as a junior last season. He was a first-team all-area selection and a key player on a defense that helped lead Rogers to its first state semifinals appearance since 1989.

Killen will be presented a All-DoD Team jersey at a ceremony at Rogers.

Lamar signs with UAB

Lauderdale County baseball standout Adam Lamar made his college plans official Wednesday, signing with UAB.

The left-handed pitcher had been verbally committed to the Blazers since August.

“I feel really good,” Lamar said. “It’s something you’d like to get off your chest. Now, I’m just ready to get the high school season under way.

“That’s my main focus right now. We’re working really hard, and I think we have a chance to do something that’s never been done at our school.”

Lamar, who also had interest from UAH, said his final decision came down to UAB, Calhoun Community College and Wallace State. He said a familiarity with UAB assistant coach Josh Hopper and the opportunity to play Division I ball appealed to him.

“My brother played for coach Hopper when he was at Berry College,” Lamar said. “I already had a relationship with coach Hopper. I knew that if I went down there and bought into what he was saying, I was going to be in the best position to be the best I can be.”

Lamar figures to pitch exclusively for the Blazers.

Lamar was a first-team all-area and an honorable-mention all-state selection as a junior, compiling a 1.38 ERA and an 8-4 record while totaling 105 strikeouts and seven complete games. He also played outfield and batted .392 with 48 RBIs, 24 doubles and 12 stolen bases.

Hubbard football moving to campus

Three years after consolidating with Hazlewood, R.A. Hubbard is building an on-campus football stadium, which could be the site of home games this fall.

According to a Department of Education capital plan, the project has a budget of $700,000.

The football team previously played at a stadium at the old Courtland campus. The Hazlewood stadium has not been used since the schools merged.

The new stadium will be on the site of the practice field on the Hubbard campus. Lights were installed before last season. Recently, bleachers from the old Courtland and Hazlewood stadiums were moved to the new stadium site.
