Residential fire electrical

A Saturday night fire that damaged a local residence was electrical, fire officials said Monday.

Muscle Shoals Fire Inspector Donald Ray Coons said the fire happened Saturday night at 9:15 p.m. at 2109 Virginia Ave.

Coons said it was determined the fire started from an electrical problem in an enclosed patio above the garage.

“Once the fire started it got into the attic and then broke through the ceiling and got into the living room area,” Coons said.

He said most of the damaged was contained to the enclosed patio and the living room.

“The guys did a great job. They got inside and cut (the fire) off and were able to keep it from spreading,” Coons said.

He said other areas of the house received smoke and water damage.

Coons said the owners of the house were not home.

FLORENCE

Man faces rape charges

An 18-year-old man has been charged with having sex with an underage girl, officials said.

Javius Montel Kirkman, 18, 2713 Terrace Place, Florence, is charged with second-degree rape.

Kirkman is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Authorities said the girl’s father caught the two together at his residence and called police.

Kirkman is out of jail on bail of $5,000.
