Lexington asks water customers to conserve after pump breaks down

LEXINGTON — A mechanical malfunction with a water pump has town officials asking the customers of the water department to not use any excess water over the next few days.

“We’ve got a problem at the well and we’re requesting that our customers use water for only household usage at this time,” Lexington Mayor Tim Collier said. Collier said he hopes to have the problem resolved within the next few days.

Town officials said Lexington uses a well to supply the water department’s 1,100 customers. The well is located just outside of town in the Springfield community.

Town officials said the well has the ability to produce 450,000 gallons of water a day. The Lexington water department uses about 200,000-250,000 gallons per day for its customers.

Collier said the problem can be repaired by installing another pump into the well.
