Lexington girls win battle of top-5 teams

Lexington (9-2, 1-0) went on the road and claimed a 42-33 Class 2A, Area 15 win in a matchup pitting two teams ranked in the state’s top five.

The 5th-ranked Golden Bears opened with a 9-4 run and extended their lead to 19-9 at the half. A fourth-quarter surge came up short for No. 2 Tanner (0-1, 0-1) as Lexington made free throws late to secure the win.

Haven Albright and Savannah Stults each scored 13 for Lexington, while Sydney Houston notched a game-high 17 for Tanner.

n Covenant Christian 60, Sheffield 18: Bailey Hill scored a game-high 33 points and Anna Claire Noblit added 17 as Class 1A, No. 3 Covenant Christian (11-1) downed Sheffield 60-18.

The Eagles held a 29-6 lead after the opening quarter and cruised to the road win.

Tyzia Price led Sheffield (0-6) with 8 points.

n Belgreen 66, Phillips 30: Freshman Allyson Bragwell scored a game-high 22 points as Belgreen knocked off Phillips in Class 1A, Area 15 play. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 2-2 in area play.

Laken Bragwell added 14 points, while Lexie Bragwell tallied 13.

Raven Lolley led the way for Phillips with 11.

n Phil Campbell 60, Colbert Heights 45: Freshman Hope Cook made 17 of 18 free-throw attempts and led all scorers with 28 points as Phil Campbell (6-4, 2-1) downed Colbert Heights in Class 2A, Area 16 action.

The Bobcats outscored the Wildcats 35-16 in the second and third quarters for the road victory.

Vickie McAlister added 13 points for Phil Campbell. Sophomore Tiffany Terry led Colbert Heights (4-4, 1-2) with 16.

n Rogers 60, Brooks 52: Maggie Green scored 21 points and Rogers jumped out to a big early lead before holding off Brooks.

Rogers (4-4) led 33-14 at the half. Morgan Killen finished with 16 points and Ashley Robertson added 11 for Rogers.

Deanna Thompson paced Brooks (1-4) with 21 points.

n Tharptown 66, Vina 44: Tharptown was 21 of 26 at the free-throw line and stayed unbeaten in Class 1A, Area 15.

Kamri Sears scored 16 points for Tharptown (6-2, 4-0), while Savannah Robinson and Kassy Baker added 10 points each.

Tharptown outscored Vina (5-4. 2-4) in each quarter.

Miranda Howard led Vina with 19 points and Morgan Howard chipped in with 12 points.

n Red Bay 68, Cherokee 17: Eleven players scored as unbeaten Red Bay (6-0, 3-0) rolled past Cherokee in a Class 2A, Area 16 play.

Hannah McKinney led the Tigers with 11 points. Darby Madden pitched in with 10 as Red Bay opened a 29-6 lead after the first quarter.

n Marion County 42, Hackleburg 27: Marion County ended the game with a 9-3 run to hold off Hackleburg.

Brianna Johnson scored 15 points and Jennifer Ryan added 10 for the Red Raiders, who led by six points going into the fourth quarter.

Kaitlyn Adams led Hackleburg with nine points.

n Central 55, Waterloo 22: Central limited Waterloo to single digits in each quarter on the way to the win.

The Wildcats led 12-3 after the first quarter and 29-12 at halftime.

Bailey Nelson led Central (6-2) with 11 points while Meagan Wilkerson led Waterloo with seven.

n Hardin County 44, Wayne County 32: A fourth-quarter rally fell short as Wayne County lost to Hardin County. The Wildcats managed only 18 points in the first three quarters in falling behind by 13 points.

Margan Ann Mathis led Wayne County (3-7) with nine points while Hardin County (5-3) was led by Emily Gray with 18.

Boys

n Belgreen 61, Phillips 55: Brock Hester and Chase Landers combined for 42 points as Belgreen took over first place in the Class 1A, Area 16 race.

Landers scored Belgreen’s first 10 points and Hester had eight points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs (8-1, 4-0) held on for the win. Hester and Landers each finished with 21 points.

Tyler Crumpton’s 24 points paced Phillips (6-1, 3-1). Phillips led 26-24 at the half and the game was tied at 40 going into the final quarter.

n Sheffield 64, Covenant Christian 28: Shaquille Carroll scored 24 points as Sheffield (4-2) secured a home win over Covenant Christian.

The Bulldogs claimed a 41-16 lead at the midway point and held the Eagles to 12 points in the second half.

Simon Ridgeway added 10 points for Sheffield, while Hunter Campbell led Covenant Christian (2-9) with 9.

n Brooks 81, Rogers 60: Brooks (5-1) jumped out to a 10-point, first-quarter lead and never looked back in beating Rogers.

Skyler Beck, Holden Corum, and Canaan Sides each scored 15 point for the Lions.

Caleb Morrow led the Pirates (3-2) with 13 and Brady Murks added 10.

n Phil Campbell 55, Colbert Heights 48: Three players scored in double figures as Phil Campbell (7-3, 2-1) defeated Colbert Heights in Class 2A, Area 16 play.

The Bobcats held a 44-30 lead after three quarters and a fourth-quarter rally fell short for Colbert Heights (4-4, 2-1).

Skeeter Benford paced Phil Campbell with 18 points, while Cameron Harris and Colton Vickery each added 14.

Cole Claunch scored 18 points for Colbert Heights, as Kaleb Suggs tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds.

n Central 58, Waterloo 52: Sophomore Austin Gean scored 16 points and knocked down clutch free throws late as Central (3-5) edged Waterloo (1-7).

The Wildcats led 30-25 at the half and pushed it to 43-35 after three quarters. Waterloo cut into the lead, but Gean made 7 of his 8 free throw attempts down the stretch to turn away the Cougars.

Tyler Whipple led all scorers with 21 points for Waterloo, while Wayne Darby chipped in with 15.

Desmond Koger added 12 for Central.

n Tharptown 69, Vina 29: Tharptown jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

The Wildcats led 41-14 at halftime. Riley Nolen led Tharptown (6-5) with 17 points while Kelby Hallmark scored 12 and Blake Gray added 10. R.J. Henderson led Vina with 10 points.

n Hardin County 60, Wayne County 44: Hardin County rode a big second quarter to a 6 victory over Wayne County.

Harden County outscored the Wildcats 20-6 in the second period to take a 25-15 halftime lead. Hardin County then put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Wayne County 16-8.

Kelby Wardlow led Hardin County with 17 points while Jonathan Roach and Dustin Wilkerson each had 13. Sawyer Ray led Wayne County with 14 points and Jaylen Bevis added 10.
