A Red Bay man has been jailed in Franklin County after being indicted on charges that accuses him of raping a 15-year-old girl who he met at a football game in September.

Kevin Crum, 22, 1515 Fifth St., Red Bay, is charged with a first-degree rape charge, Red Bay Police Chief Jana Jackson said Thursday. She said the indictment was issued during the grand jury session in January.

Authorities said the rape reportedly took place at a Red Bay residence Sept. 23 after the a high school football game.

Jackson said witness statements indicate the two spoke at the game and met again later at a convenience store.

"He gave her a ride to a mutual friend's residence at Village Green Apartments," Jackson said.

Authorities said Crum and the girl were at the residence with at least three other people. They said the rape reportedly happened in the kitchen of the apartment, but the other people did not hear anything out of the ordinary happening.

"They were all watching a movie and Crum walked into the kitchen," Jackson said. "The victim said she went into the kitchen to get a drink of water and he approached her." Police said Crum is accused of knocking the girl to the kitchen floor and then raping her. Jackson said the girl was not physically injured during the rape.

The girl reported the incident to police and an investigation followed, Jackson said.

Information from the investigation was delivered to the district attorney's office and was later presented to grand jurors.

Twenty-nine percent of rape victims are between ages of 12 and 17, according to information released from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. The report also states that 12 percent of girls in grades 9-12 said they had been sexually abused.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization survey, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every two minutes. That survey indicated there is an average of 207,754 victims age 12 or older who are raped or sexually abused every year.

Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said the case against Crum could be placed on the trial docket this summer.

First-degree rape is a Class A felony and is punishable by 10 years to life in prison, if convicted.

Crum is being held in jail without bail.
